Weak pelvic floor can cause more troubles than you would think! It affects intimate health, causes incontinence with leaks and also psychological problems. Do not underestimate its influence on your quality of life. The good news is that there is a solution to improve overall quality of life – it is called Emsella.

What is Emsella?

Emsella is a US FDA cleared device for strengthening pelvic floor muscles and for the treatment of urinary incontinence in both males and females. Emsella utilizes HIFEM technology (high intensity focused electromagnetic energy) to target the pelvic floor muscles without conscious effort on your own. It delivers more than 11,000 supramaximal contractions of the pelvic floor muscles or Kegel muscle contractions in a single 28 minute session. This is essential for muscle re-education of incontinent patients, women after childbirth and those with decreased intimate satisfaction.

The pelvic floor muscles are like a net or sling that support the pelvic floor organs such as the bladder, rectum and womb. Due to aging, frequent lifting of heavy objects or after childbirth and menopause, the muscles weaken resulting in urinary incontinence such as leaking urine whenever one coughs, sneezes, laughs or even jump. Emsella therefore helps to strengthen the weakened pelvic floor muscles, reduce urinary incontinence and improve female intimate health and even sexual satisfaction.

Urinary Incontinence

What is urinary incontinence?

Some of the most common conditions associated with women post-pregnancy are diastasis recti, urinary incontinence and decreased sexual satisfaction due to weakened abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles. Urinary incontinence is when urine is passed unintentionally. The pelvic floor muscles hold these organs in place – the bladder, rectum and womb. Due to ageing, heavy lifting or after childbirth and menopause, the muscles weaken resulting in involuntary urine loss as the muscles are unable to hold up these organs and can relax during inconvenient times, leading to embarrassing leaks. Emsella can strengthen the weakened pelvic floor muscles, and improve urinary incontinence and sexual satisfaction thereby improving the quality of life of these women.

There are several types of urinary incontinence, including:

  • Stress incontinence – the most common type of incontinence where urine leaks out when the bladder is under pressure e.g. coughing or laughing
  • Urge incontinence – urine leaks when there is an urge to pee, or leakage after peeing.
  • Overflow incontinence (chronic urinary retention) – frequent leakage occurs due to the inability to fully empty the bladder.
  • Total incontinence – bladder is unable to store urine causing constant peeing and leaking.

It is possible to have a mixture of both stress and urge urinary incontinence.

What are the treatments for urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence can be reduced with Kegel exercises by regularly contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles. It can be an effective method but it can be difficult to identify the correct muscles and at times, it may not work due to the weakened muscle strength. There are also certain risks when done incorrectly and it could lead to further weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. Emsella is a good alternative that surpasses the amount of muscle contractions achieved with Kegel exercises.

How does Emsella work?

Emsella is based on HIFEM technology and the electromagnetic wave triggers muscular contractions just like ‘working out’ the muscles like Kegels do, but at a higher speed and intensity with less effort.

The HIFEM technology creates a magnetic field around the pelvic floor, triggering the contractions that give the muscles an intense workout. Muscles are strengthened and tightened with each session. Emsella targets the muscle without conscious effort on your end – this is known as the supramaximal level of contraction. This treatment increases the strength of the pelvic floor muscles to help prevent leaks.

Supramaximal Contractions With Emsella

The number of muscle contractions is vital in reducing incontinence and Emsella is a non-invasive treatment without downtime. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) is the greatest amount of contraction by our muscles during exercise. With Emsella, contractions with higher intensity than MVC are known as supramaximal. The HIFEM technology creates supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions and holds them for a couple of seconds. The key to the effectiveness of Emsella’s HIFEM technology is in the gradually increasing intensity of the focused electromagnetic fields and frequency of pulses. This is essential for patients with urinary incontinence who need to strengthen pelvic floor muscles but are unable to achieve this much contractions via Kegel exercises.

Why Emsella at Ageless?

Can Emsella be combined with other body treatments?

Emsella can be combined with Exilis Femme for improved feminine health. Combining both treatments can help achieve optimal results. One can help to build pelvic floor muscles while the other can help to tighten the vaginal wall and can further reduce urinary incontinence, improve female intimate health and overall quality of life of women.

Combining Emsculpt Neo with Emsella provides a holistic core-to-floor muscle workout. Utilizing both the radio frequency and HIFEM technologies to strengthen, firm and tone the abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles. Together, Emsculpt Neo and Emsella provide what is known as the “Core to Floor” therapy, strengthening core muscles and pelvic floor muscles to treat conditions such as diastasis recti and urinary incontinence. Core to Floor therapy helps to kick start the building of strong core muscles resulting in an elegant and sophisticated posture for an overall positive first impression. It also helps us to have better stamina whenever we exercise. To maintain optimal results, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise is also important after treatment with Emsculpt Neo and Emsella.

How does the treatment feel like and is there downtime?

Patients will be fully clothed during the treatment, and seated on the Emsella chair in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Patients may experience tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions during the procedure. There is no downtime, you may resume daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Emsella is suitable for both women and men of all ages seeking to improve urinary incontinence, strengthen pelvic floor muscles and for women – improve intimate wellness.

However, Emsella is not for women who are pregnant, people with a pacemaker, or metal plates – such as hip replacements or a copper coil or IUD. Emsella is also not for conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse.

How many sessions are needed?

We recommend twice a week for the first three weeks. Maintenance sessions are to be done once every one to two weeks.

When will I see results?

There will be an improvement after one session and results will continue to improve over the next few weeks, and results vary within individuals. Clinical studies show that the majority of patients can maintain results six months after treatment.
