Waking Up with Glowing Skin!
By Dr. Pat Shutchaidat
As health and wellness emerged amid the global pandemic in 2022, we saw a rise in patients seeking treatments to achieve their glow up for a less is more “I woke up like this” look. More than ever, patients focus on their skin’s underlying health, not just its superficial appearance. There is a new appetite for achieving healthy, resilient, naturally glowing skin: beautifying the skin inside and out. It is no longer enough to rely on primers, concealers and highlighters for a glow. Makeup trends are now moving to more of a minimal makeup look, lighter coverage and celebrating a healthy complexion. I believe that this will continue to be a strong focus for 2022.
The most common skin issue many of us might experience is dull, uneven skin tone. Factors contributing to dull skin include age, overuse of harsh products, dehydration, exfoliating too much (or not enough) etc. At the same time, unevenness is usually due to redness, acne scars, large pores, pigmentations or blemishes caused by sun damage. Understanding that if you treat early, create and commit to a consistent care plan, less aggressive treatments will be necessary as you age. The “#Iwokeuplikethis” look is achievable with consistency. Here are some ways to help you achieve that natural glowing look – your best self.
Skincare
The first step toward healthy skin is a good skincare routine; the routine doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective! I believe in good quality products that suit your skin type and consistency. Remember, skincare is unique to every person – products that work for others may not be for you. That’s why I prefer to tell you about tips and ingredients that work and give you products that contain those goodies.
Start your skincare routine with a gentle cleanser, so it doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils and moisture. Then apply an exfoliant twice weekly or opt for medical-grade facial treatments for a deep, effective cleanse. Next, a toner – Ingredients to look for in a toner include salicylic acid, alpha and beta hydroxy acids (help exfoliate the skin), hyaluronic acid (provides hydration) etc. Toning balances your skin and helps restore the pH balance to prepare your skin for other skincare products. For more radiance, follow with a layer of serums. Serums contain concentrated doses of active ingredients. There are many formulas – ones to hydrate, anti-aging, brighten, exfoliate, everything. For example, a brightening serum may contain ingredients like Vitamin A derivatives, Alpha Arbutin, Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid, Niacinamide and Tranexamic acid. Some of these ingredients can cause skin irritations; consult your doctors for suggestions before starting! Antioxidant serums, such as Vitamin C, can also be used to guard your skin against daily damage and create that glow. Lastly, apply moisturizers to help soothe the skin and prevents dryness. Your skin’s outermost layer acts as a barrier and protects the underlying tissue from external aggressors. Therefore, it is essential to keep your skin well hydrated. And, of course, sunscreen is non-negotiable!
Oral supplements and Skin injectables
Taking oral sunblock such as Heliocare (contains Fernblock® or Polypodium Leucotomos extract), which has excellent antioxidant properties, can help reduce UV-exposed skin damage and prevent the formation of hyperpigmentation caused by UV rays. Multiple vitamins and supplements have demonstrated evidence of improving skin appearance. For example, Crystal Tomato® is a dietary supplement that is 100% natural; it contains Crystal Tomato® Carotenoid that has been scientifically proven to be beneficial for skin health. It aids in achieving a fairer, even, radiant complexion and healthier skin and offers skin protection against sun damage.
Skin injectables such as Profhilo and Rejuran are essentially skin quality products designed to hydrate and repair the skin. Skin boosters are the perfect treatment to nourish, deeply hydrate, improve skin elasticity, stimulate collagen production and help to restore skin’s natural luminosity. With many skin boosters available on the market and new products being introduced every year, it can be challenging to determine which one is right for you – Find out more here, or contact us for further details!
Skin rejuvenation treatments
Of course, there are non-invasive treatments such as pigment lasers that can help to lighten pigmentations (we will talk about these lasers in another post!). And as we know, Ultherapy and Thermage are non-invasive skin tightening treatments (you may refer to my earlier article ) that can treat skin laxity. But, the latest US FDA-approved technology that can help you achieve glowing, radiant and pore-less skin is Sylfirm X.
Sylfirm X is a minimally invasive treatment that combines the power of micro-needling and dual wave radio-frequency (RF) technology to improve skin laxity, texture, tone, and the appearance of scars, all the while rejuvenating your skin and restoring a youthful appearance. What sets Sylfirm X apart is its ability to customize and adjust the needle depth, power and pulse wave settings – allowing it to treat different sites and skin conditions. It is the only fractional RF micro-needling device featuring both a pulse wave or a short pulse and continuous wave mode.
Sylfirm X can be used to treat the face, body, and even around the eyes area. I have seen excellent skin texture, wrinkle improvement, and pigmentation results from Sylfirm X. It is also my go-to device for melasma treatment. During the treatment, you may feel some slight discomfort and heat. Your skin will be a little red; however, the discomfort and redness are short-lived. You can resume your daily activities almost straight away. Sylfirm X is the latest device to give you the ultimate rejuvenation option for those that want to age gracefully, healthier and visibly fresher but 100% you. It brings the glow back to lacklustre skin.
